Abstract

The strategic position of Xavier Fàbregas within editorials, juries, the Institut del Teatre, etc. allowed him to discover and help to discover young authors as well as theatre plays of classic and modern playwrights. Due to the advice given to many groups and his frequent trips to other provinces, the above mentioned texts were often suggested to be played. Therefore, his relevant intervention in the theatrical and cultural life of the country, which for sure was fruit of a specific political and social moment, has always been consciously assumed with a deep professional ethic. But despite this critic's influence: «At the end, who decides is the public». We must remember that his great imagination and creativity found in the philosophy of the chess game sorne of his essential principles. As a strategist with great humanity, the critic submits himself to one rule: his complete and absolute faithfulness to the public.

During somee 35 years, Fàbregas has been present in almost every written press medium from Barcelona. He used to collaborate on a regular basis with specialized magazines of all Spain and foreign countries. He was engaged with his time and his society and along his career he used various methodologies of critical analysis. His sense of responsibility, in a country where theatrical tradition was to be recovered, forced him not to neglect the didactic side of criticism. His global understanding of theatre, conceived in a wide sense of performance, made him not to trespass the limit zones between theatre and dance, the religious rite, popular celebrations and shows. Without confining himself to only one system, Xavier Fàbregas has left space for all kind of observations.
