Abstract

This work is about his daily testimony, his observing capacity, the almost notarial meaning of the notes that translated these observations and that attest twenty years of Catalan theatre.

Before the publishing of the magazine Serra d'Or and the first articles which preluded his later actions, Xavier Fàbregas had already begun to sort out systematically material from all the lectures he had given. He used to write down references about the work he had read as well as a résumé of the argument. We often also find his opinion or the comment of some details that would draw his attention. At the same time, and in separate notebooks he used to call «Apunts de Teatre» he would comment some very concrete aspects or transcribe passages -sometimes even whole scenes- that he found to be of interest. We again find these comments properly elaborated in his w hole work.

Xavier Fabregas also elaborated on small résumé-cards all the theatre performances he saw. On these cards we find the most important critics of every show as well as the most di verse and suggestive observations.

From 1977 on he used to complete his notes with another series of quotations he would call «Elements de Semiologia» where he states a new orientation of his interests and observations, more linked to new currents of investigation, made by European theorists.

His observation capacity, which becomes patent in the meticulous redacting of notebooks and quotations, can also be found in his journey notes, his agendas and the impressive richness of his archives. This archive demands an urgent plan of conservation, even a computerized treatment in order to facilitate its use for students and future projects. Although he is not anymore with us, Fabregas can do much for our culture and our country.
