AUTHOR GUIDELINES

GUIDELINES FOR SUBMISSION OF PAPERS

People sending papers to be published in Estudis Escènics – Quaderns de l'Institut del Teatre must observe the following guidelines:

1. The papers sent must be written in Catalan, Spanish or English. The articles in English will be translated into Catalan. The papers in Catalan or Spanish will be translated into English, arranged by Estudis Escènics. The abstracts and keywords are published in Catalan, Spanish and English.

2. Two types of papers are accepted:

- Papers for the “Miscel·lània” section. This section is open throughout the year to receive any kind of article on the performing arts in general (in other words, in relation to any historical period, critical perspective or discipline involved). Theoretical works as well as critical, historical or educational studies are accepted.

- Papers for the “Dossier” section. For each issue, Estudis Escènics proposes one or two thematic dossiers for which there is a specific call for papers. Their content and period of submission appear on the tab “Avisos” of the journal website.

3. The papers must be sent via the website portal estudisescenics.institutdelteatre.cat in Rich Text Format (rtf) OpenOffice Writer (odt) or Microsoft Word (doc). There will be no correspondence concerning originals not sent via the web portal or in other formats.

4. Non-text elements (tables, boxes, maps, graphs, illustrations, etc.) included in the work will be inserted in the corresponding place of the text. Moreover, the illustrations and pictures in JPEG or TIFF format at 300 ppp and the editable graphs in OpenOffice Calc (ods) or Microsoft Excel (xls) format must be submitted as attached files. They must all be numbered and titled and their source specified below, with explicit reference to it in the text. For pictures, copyright must be specified.

5. The works sent must be unpublished. The Editorial Board has the power to accept or reject a paper.

6. The papers and proposals for debate must be preceded by a cover sheet with the following information:

• Title, in Catalan or Spanish, and in English.
• Author’s name. The inclusion of new authors once the paper has been submitted will not be accepted. The ORCID identification number must be provided, if you have it. Otherwise, you can register at https://orcid.org/ to obtain it.
• Institutional affiliation: university or centre, department or unit, city and country.
• E-mail. In the case of papers with multiple authors, the person who will correspond with the journal must be specified.
•  A brief biographical note (maximum 60 words) detailing the highest qualifications obtained (and from which university), current position and main lines of research. Estudis Escènics can publish this biographical note as a complement to the information about the papers.

7. The text of the papers must be preceded by an abstract of a maximum length of 250 words (which must clearly and concisely set out the objectives, methodology, main results and conclusions of the work) and a maximum of 10 keywords. If the text is written in Spanish or Catalan, the abstract and the keywords must be added in English. If the text is originally written in English, the Editorial Board can translate the title, the abstract and the keywords into Catalan, if the author does not provide this translation.

8. All the papers are subject to a double-blind assessment. Estudis Escènics undertakes not to provide any detail that can identify the authors during the assessment process.

9. The papers must have a maximum length of 50,000 characters with spaces, including footnotes and excluding the title, abstract, keywords, illustrations and graphs or tables.

10. Footnotes. Footnotes must only contain clarifications and comments but not bibliographical references. At most, they must contain the translation of an original-language quotation into the language of the paper.

11. Quotations: rules

Literal quotations go between inverted commas and are followed by the corresponding reference between brackets, which must include the pages quoted; if they exceed four lines, they must be transcribed separately from the main text, without inverted commas, with a bigger indentation and a smaller font size.

12. Quotations: translation

Quotations from publications will be included in the text in the same language in which the article is written (Catalan, Spanish or English), indicating that it is a translation by the author of the article if there is no translation of the book cited. If the book has already been translated, the published translation will be cited.
If the author of the article considers it necessary for the reader to see the original wording of the text quoted, the original quote can be added in a footnote.

Given that all articles in Catalan and Spanish are translated into English for inclusion in a bilingual version in the full issue, all the original English quotations used to write the article must be included, either in a footnote (if this option is chosen) or an endnote. Then we can pass them on to the English translator.
In the case of articles in English, if quotations from books in Spanish or Catalan have been used, the original quotation in these languages will be needed (also in a footnote or endnote) for inclusion in the article in Catalan/Spanish.

13. Quotations: references

The reference must include the surname of the author, the year of the original edition and the year of translation or edition consulted. If necessary, the pages of the edition consulted can be mentioned. When two works by the same author have the same year, they must be distinguished with lower case letters after the year. If there are two authors, the two surnames must be cited, joined by "and". When there are more than two authors, the surname of the first author must be cited followed by et al., although in the reference in the final bibliography all the authors can be cited.

Invented example:

-          Ramellets et al. (1903b, edition 2016: 16)

14. The complete list of bibliographical references must be placed at the end of the text, under the epigraph "Bibliographical references"

Only the works cited in the text must be included, and all the works cited must be referenced in the final list.

All the references with DOI (Digital Object Identifier) must be included at the end.

For works by classical authors and literary and generalist publications (novels, poems, philosophy, politics...) there is no need to cite the date of the original work.

The order must be alphabetical by author's surname. In the case of different references by the same author, they must be chronologically arranged according to year of edition consulted. In the case of more than one reference in the same year, alphabetical lettering must be placed after the year. Hanging indent must be applied to all references.

The format of the references must respect the following:

a) Books: author's surname, author's first name, year of the work consulted between brackets, title in italics, place of publication and publishing house. Between square brackets, translator, original language, original title and year of publication. Example:

• Lehmann, Hans-Thies (2013): Teatro post-dramático. Murcia, CENDEAC. [Translation from German by Diana González et al. Original edition: Postdramatisches Theater (1999)].

b) Journal articles, book chapters or jointly edited books: author's surname, author's first name, year of the work consulted between brackets, title of the chapter or article between double commas, “In:” book author, [by magazines or newspapers “In:” is not necessary; see 1^st example], book title in italics, place of publication, publishing house and pages of the article or chapter. Between square brackets, translator, original language, original title and year of publication. In case the issue of a magazine belonging to a certain volume must be specified, we will write: III:3 (date), ie, third volume, third issue of the magazine, and the date of publication in brackets at the end.
