About the Journal

Estudis Escènics is the journal of the Institut del Teatre and its higher drama and dance schools. Founded in 1957, it features works of research, reflection and debate on the performing arts in Catalonia and all over the world. It has a Scientific Committee and an Editorial Board made up by renowned specialists at international level. The papers of Estudis escènics are subject to a double review; the journal is published in digital format and open access.

Call for papers - «Society makes the show. Performing arts, communities and cultural rights»

The journal Estudis Escènics is launching a new call for contributions for the monographic dossier in issue 51 (2026): “Society makes the show. Performing arts, communities and cultural rights”, and to participate in the 7th International Symposium of the journal Estudis Escènics that will take place on 8 and 9 October 2025 in Institut del Teatre in Barcelona.

Authors should submit a prior proposal, which should include an abstract of the content of the article and a brief curriculum. The proposal should be submitted (in Catalan, Spanish or English) on the following online form before May 15: https://forms.office.com/e/uE7xShM3Nt

Current Issue

No. 50 (2025): Dossier: "Live Art and Uncertain Technologies"

This issue explores the relationship between live art and technology, with special attention on those technologies that we have called "uncertain" due to their hybrid nature, the indeterminacy of their use and their propensity for rapid evolution often leading to unexpected paths, based on digital media and virtual tools. We are interested in reflecting on how technology "modifies" or expands the body itself (devices, virtual reality interfaces, neural implants, prostheses, etc.), how all this can impact on relationships between people showing, consequently, repercussions for creation. We are therefore interested in exploring the performing arts potential of this kind of technical innovation: what opportunities does it provide when it comes to expanding the concepts of theatricality and performativity? How can virtuality dialogue with the in-person nature of theatre?
