Abstract

Articulated among them by various recurrent elements, Joseph Beuys' actions are the materialization of a speech which begins in the main trends of thought, summons different areas of knowledge and shows itself, as a global and unitary whole, through a series of objects, materials and personal roles, always joined together, which repeatedly are subjected to severa! readings and changeable critica! connotations.

Concerned by every subject dealing with the human being, including from the notion of individual freedom to every kind of dialectical opositions such as intuition/reason, politics/individual or production means/knowledge, Joseph Beuys thinks the connexion between Art and Life to be the only synthetic and global option among all categories. Then he uses every kind of physical resort to express his idea: animals, blackboards, metaphoric conceptualism, significant materials and symbolic relationships which remove interdisciplinary frontiers, those transforming it into a pedagogic shamanic figure; because of this accumulation of approaches and roles he is bound finaly to get directly involved in social activism, a natural and consistent extension of his artistic speech.
