Introducció a: «Jesús batejat per Sant Joan Baptista»
Abstract
That is a pastoral play on a Biblical subject which was published by Guillem Agel in Tuïr in 1796. It is composed of the following four scenes: a monologue by St John; a dialogue between St John, two Publicans, two soldiers, a Saducee and a Pharisee; St John baptises Jesus; a dialogue between St John and the Pharisees. That play belongs to the classic period of the theatre in Roussillon, which keeps away from the popular trend and stands out because of the observance of the moral, like the plays by Racine, Corneille and Metastase which were translated into Catalan. Several plays written in Roussillon at that time deal with St John the Baptist. Josep Sebastià Pons has ascribed that play to Miquel Ribes, but his autorship seems unlikely. Text of the play.
